The musical AIDA opened at the Palace Theatre on Broadway in March 2000 and ran for four and a half years (1,852 performances and 30 previews), making it one of the longest-running musicals on Broadway. The story is inspired by Giuseppe Verdi's opera of the same name, for which Auguste Mariette wrote the libretto.
AIDA has been performed in more than 20 countries around the world and has been translated, including English, into 15 languages. Amazingly, the musical by British composers Elton John and Tim Rice has never been performed in England.
AIDA the Musical has won four Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Music for a Musical. Time Magazine ranked the musical AIDA as one of the ten best musicals of the year. The touring version across the United States won five Touring Broadway Awards, including Best Musical. AIDA has also won a number of other prestigious awards: the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Clarence Derwent Award and more.
The Broadway cast recording CD won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album. The song "Written in the Stars" from the musical reached number two on the Billboard US chart and number one on the Canadian chart. The Karlín Music Theatre and EMI Music are considering releasing a Czech album of the musical.
Elton John's music is stylistically eclectic. It features modern reggae, Motown and gospel. Of course, Elton's typical pop is represented, and we can trace a strong influence of African music.
