Novotný Petr

He studied directing at DAMU in Prague. He first directed drama productions and then began working as a musical director during his stay at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen. There he directed two musicals with music by John Kander - Zorba the Greek, Cabaret. He staged the musical Sugar (Někdo to rád horké), in 1986, at the HD in Karlín. He became a member of the Karlin ensemble as director and artistic director 1986-1990. Among others, he directed the following outstanding musical productions: Gypsies Go to Heaven (Evgeny Doga, Emil Potkanu), Play it Again, Same (Woody Allen), Funny Girl (Jule Styne). Since 1990, he has been working independently. He directed the Czech version of the French musical Les Misérables (1992). His first own project was Weber and Roceno's musical Jesus Christ Superstar at the Spiral Theatre at the Prague Exhibition Grounds (1994), which he re-staged for its 1000th performance (1997). This was followed by the first Czech production of Weber's roceno musical Evita (1998) at the same theatre. His most important direction is the staging of Libuše by B. For Semafor he directed Jiří Suchý's musical comedy My Heart is Zimmer Frei (1997). At the Vinohrady Theatre he directed Jiří Hubac's play A Feast at Petronio's (1997) and a dramatisation of Marquez's novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (2000). He directed the first Czech production of the musical Blood Brothers at the VČD in Pardubice (2001). He recently created the following productions at HD Karlín: My Fair Lady (1995), Hello Dolly! (1996), Some Like It Hot (1997), (Greek) Zorba (1999), he directed the musical Singing in the Rain (2001) and participated in the translation of the libretto.
