Čičvák Martin

Director and playwright Martin Čičvák graduated in theatre directing at the JAMU in Brno under prof. During his studies, he has already attracted attention with several significant productions at Studio Marta as well as productions of his own plays (The House Where It's Done Well and Sonia the Agent). In 1999-2004 he was the director of the drama department of the National Theatre Brno, and for his first direction of Bernhard's Immanuel Kant he won the Alfréd Radok Award - Talent of the Year 1999. Since 2000, he has been a tribal director of the Prague Drama Club. His most recent productions in Prague include, in addition to the Drama Club (Tennessee Williams: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, 2022 and Peter Shaffer: Equus, 2021), ABC's Diva-dlo (adaptation of Charlie Chaplin's The Dictator, 2021), Rokoko (David Grossman: A Horse Comes to the Bar, 2020), Divadlo pod Palmovkou (Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, 2021), Divadlo Ungelt (Stephen Temperley's Beautiful Memory, 2021) and Divadlo na Vinohradech (Viktor Dyk: The Wise Don Quixote, 2020), among others the National Theatre Brno (Labiche: The Straw Hat, 2020) and Divadlo J. Til in Pilsen. He made his debut at the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava with Schimmelpfennig's The Arabian Nights (2004), a production that won several awards from the Slovak theatre critic Dosky, and nominations for Dosky at the same venue also brought him Schiller's drama Treachery and Love (2007), Büchner's Leonce and Lena (Dosky 2008) and both parts of Goethe's Faust (2010). Since 2004, he has regularly collaborated with the Bratislava Aréna Theatre. In 2019 he directed his adaptation of John Cassavetes' film The Premiere at the Budapest Comedy Theatre (Vígszín- ház). He first appeared at the National Theatre in Prague in 2003, when he staged Brecht's The Good Man of Szechuan, followed by his own dramatisation of A Thousand and One Nights (2005), Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (2009) and The Taming of the Shrew (2011). In the operatic field he has collaborated with the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen (Bellini: Capulets and Montagues, 2001, Mozart: Abduction from the Seraglio, 2003) and with the National Theatre in Prague (Mozart: Così fan tutte, 2010, and Verdi: Macbeth, 2015).
