The tragedy describes the state of the human soul. Comedy was invented by humans to cope with it. So we're somewhere between laughter and death. The best proof of this theory is the musical Murder Behind the Curtain (CURTAINS), which even makes fun of murder, and suffers more than one loss during its torturous journey to Broadway.
This is how one of the writers, Rupert Holmes, succinctly - and typically for him - describes this unusual detective musical.
Murder Behind the Curtain (CURTAINS) the musical is, in fact, a play within a play. In it, the female lead, a fading Hollywood star and basically a pretty untalented actress (Jessica Cranshaw), dies under mysterious circumstances during a thank-you party for the musical "Robin Hood of the Wild West". It's up to a police investigator, a Boston detective (Lt. Frank Cioffi) who "dabbles" in musical theater as more than just a fan, to solve the case, help save the show and get it to Broadway, falling in love while keeping everyone from losing their own lives.
Murder Behind the Curtain is a milestone in the history of the world musical. For the first time in history, it managed to combine music, dance, comedy and suspense to provide audiences with a cabaret that only Chicago or New York, New York had ever been able to offer. But let's not be surprised: after all, the writers are John Kander and Fred Ebb!
The musical CURTAINS had its world premiere on July 25, 2006 at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, and a year later it opened on Broadway with minor revisions.
