Bonnie and Clyde is a musical gangster film, full of suspense, romance and insight. It is a story about the desire to live life to the fullest, about trying to escape from the prison of the mundane, about the courage not to give in to fate and, above all, about love that does not set conditions, does not calculate, is not afraid of obstacles and even death. Frank Wildhorn, the composer of the music, gave the performance of his life. His music is light, melodic and colourful. This time, he works with genres such as gospel, swing, and even country.
The Broadway musical takes its own spin on a familiar story in American history that has become legendary. It has been the subject of many books and has been made into a movie several times. During the Depression, a pair of criminals emerged in the United States who were also icons of their time. Clyde Barrow was a young man from a family living on the edge of poverty. He had been in conflict with the law since childhood. Bonnie Parker was a girl who dreamed of becoming a Hollywood star. Both refused to live in poverty and give up their American dream. Their naivety, the inhuman harshness of the justice system and a series of circumstances made them enemies of the state. But one thing set them apart from ordinary gangsters, their love for each other. It is this that fascinates the writers of the stories of their fate, and thus the creators of this extraordinary musical.
The world premiere of this musical took place in November 2009 at La Jola Playhouse in California, and Bonnie and Clyde made its Broadway debut in December 2011.
The upcoming production at the Karlín Musical Theatre will take on a new dimension with the agreement of composer Frank Wildhorn, and will turn what was originally an intimate musical into a big show with big choruses and a dance company, as audiences are used to seeing in this musical.
